April Fools’ Day has delivered some legendary chaos over the years 😈
Here are some of the most famous pranks that people still talk about:
🧀 The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest (1957)
The BBC aired a straight-faced news segment showing Swiss farmers harvesting spaghetti from trees.
Thousands of viewers called in asking how to grow their own spaghetti tree. Iconic.
🌮 Taco Bell Buys the Liberty Bell (1996)
Taco Bell ran full-page ads claiming it bought the Liberty Bell and renamed it the “Taco Liberty Bell.”
The U.S. government had to reassure the public it was, in fact, still theirs.

The BBC released a very convincing “documentary” showing penguins that could fly… to the Amazon.
Narrated with full Attenborough energy. People believed it.

Burger King announced a Whopper designed specifically for left-handed people.
Customers actually requested it at the counter.
⌚ Google Nose (2013)
Google claimed users could search smells online. Complete with “scent bytes” and testimonials.
Ridiculous. Perfectly on-brand.
🌍 Google Maps Pokémon Challenge (2014)
Pokémon appeared all over Google Maps, and people raced to catch them.
So popular it helped inspire Pokémon Go later on.
🧪 MIT’s Campus Dome (1991)
MIT students placed a full-size police car on top of the Great Dome overnight.
Still considered one of the greatest college pranks ever.
